My school visit
My school's visit
I pads I pads I pads are they a tool to play or a tool to learn from? should we support it or fight against it? before giving an answer to these questions I would like to share with you my visit to Paul Ecke Central Elementary School.
this is a private school at San Diego that uses ipads in their classes. I have went to one of the classes and the students were using their iPads to present different topics. the students have made their own video and used their voices to present the topics.
It was so nice to see how the students were pluging their ipads to the data show. they were also helping each other if one of them had a technician problem. the teacher stood far from the student who is presenting that shows how the students were comfortable using technology. It also show how she trust their technical skills.
we then went to another class where we were exposed to tests on iPads. the teacher can set questions, the students will answer and she can see the percentage of who answered the questions. but unfortunately this test did not work.
we talked then to the students I knew that they have their homework on their ipads and they have access to it at home.
At this class they also use books and paper and pencil. So they are using a combination between technology and traditional tools which I liked.
We then went to a class were they learn in Spanish it was a dual class. It is a kind of teaching were they will teach for some years a language and after these certain amount of time they will switch to another language.
What I liked is that when we entered a student just came to us confidently and talked to us and answered our questions.
Well returning to the question I asked at the top of the post, are iPads tools to play with or are they tools to learn from? should we support it or fight against it?
I think that it depends on the things the kids do with the ipads and on the way we direct them to use it. It can be a very useful tool and it is also can be a wast of time tool.
It is also important to have a balance between ipads and the things that kids have to be to be kids(like plying out side and using paper and pen).
kids still need to use their hands and play with sand.

My 20 %
I have made an easy dish that will be a peice of cake for experienced cookers. Yet begunvers will need some steps to follow. They need a recopy.
My dish was minsead meat with tomato suace.
before cooking I didn't call any experienced cooker. I watched this video
I have served this dish to my lovely family
My husband and me ate it with spaghetti. Yousif ate it with white rice. Zaina refused to eat it:(

KG visit
My visit to the KG at The children's school
The parents who have kids in the pre-k at the children's school were invited for a brief explaination and a tour to the kindengarden..
As a parent I went to the meeting and I would like to explin to you what they are doing, what is their approach to teach students and ect.
First of all we were seated in circle, parents who had kids in kg were talking about their expeiriece and what are the thing they love in the school. Here are some of the points they mentioned:
The kids loves the school, they were expected to be their selves. Also,their curiosity was taken in mind.
They also said that the kids have confidence in their selves....
Then two wonderful KG teachers were taking about what happens in their class rooms, some of the things they said:
that the curriculum is not taped down, instead it is . the teachers will see the interest of their kids and they will try to find a way to put what they love in the curriculum.
The kids some times will not feel that they are learning. If you asked them what did you do they will say we played.
The kids will also say that we didn't do math! But the teacher would say.. No we did you solved 30 math problems.
That happens because the kids are not aware of the amount of learning that inters their heads. They learn with happeyness and enthusiasm.
Star of the day:
the teachers were asked if they have a star of the day. Guess what they don't have. She said they are all stars.
If we had this star thing the students will think when is my turn. he will think there is only one. By not doing so we will reduce the competetive atmosphere and the hate between the learners. instead we will build a loving community that ever person cares of the other.
After the circle meeting we went to the take a tour in the class rooms.
the class was so cool.
The nature
near the class they have toys with a wonderful shade from the trees. Inside the class they have a meeting rug, tables, shelves,ect. Every furniture was from wood and to the level of the kids.
They have a place to be creative and make amazing things. For example see the details in this photo, Its a rain forest.
Why it is wood
I discussion was arise about the furniture should they be colored or wooden? The school has a philosophy that it is the thing the kids do what matters and not the furniture. It is the inside and not the outside.

from my first visits to school, I have seen that the teachers doesn't open the big lights on the sealing they might have small lights in the class. I thought that by doing so that the school was saving money. But in this visit it turned out that no...
They had a thing behind this. they wanted to have this kind of atmosphere that lowers hyper and bring relaxation into the class
At the end I am so glad to be in that school. I also want to thank them for the great things they do. This was just the ice burg of the great things the school does

Adapting to a new culture
New culture
People travel and go over seas to see different countries and cultures. Some of them leave their countries for short periods and others for a long one. They have different reasons to do so yet we see them all doing the same thing
Adapting to the new culture.. accepting the change and try to live with it..
1- Driving.. I was driving in Kuwait but without a navigation and without mountains and very high bridges...
So my husband was taking me to the university and bringing me back home with my little kids who will be sleeping in the way...
So me not driving will not work.. but the problem is that I was so nervous of driving
I still remember my first day of driving,, I was on a bridge.. I didn't know which direction to go so I literary stopped I was so afraid. lucky me my husband was near me and he helped me.. gradually with a push from my friend I was driving and I gained my confidence..
I learned how to drive and follow the navigator
Well I still don't like bridges but I find myself driving and depending on my own.
2- the chat:
In the classes I find some things that i don't understand because they are about the culture like names of books, persons, sport teams...
I started to listen to the radio and maybe this kind of adapting will come by time
3- finding school and place to live;
finding a school and a house was too hard since we are new to the area it was difficult to search for a good school
4- we also searched for traditional food were we will find the brands and kind of food that we are used to.
5- It is also important to know the cultures norms.. what is accepted and what is not
7- finding friends and people that you build relationship with
6- the last thing that i would like to share is that our fire detector was making a really annouing noise for approximately three weeks we didn't know whats wrong with it..
when we asked the lady who is charged of the house she said well
CHANGE THE BATTERIES
Adapting to the new culture and be yourself and keep your identity is a challenging thing.. you need to adapt and yet remember who you are..
At the end in the foreign country you will find people who will help you and make your adaption easier .. I would like to thank them and I will be them..
They were opened and respected the different in cultures and believes.. We have in our religion that no difference between white or black we are all the same what makes us different is our piety

what does it mean to be a mom???
During my day I thought about this question and wonder what is it to be a mom..
Is being a mom means nurturing, raising, making the kid safe or what???
I think that the most important thing is to provide your child with love and accept him the way he is.
It is important to understand that this child is a gift from God and we will be asked if we full fill our mission.
Well being means:
1- provide ur child with his primary things such assaulter, food,...
2- teach ur child life and social skills. such as self defense
3- listen to him and enjoy his stories
4- share part of your life with him and let him now that he is important to you
5- make him choose. for example let him choose his bed sheet color or his pigamas.
6- respect him as a person and love him the way he is and don't ever compare him with anyone
7- play with him and have quality time together
8- teach them rules and explain why you say for things no
9- check ur blood every six months
The secret is to enjoy his laughter and his stories. Enjoy going out with him, enjoy playing with him, enjoy being a MOM.
And remember the way you treat him now the same way he will treat you later..
Also it helps to have a mother community practice back in kuwait my friend was doing some mom gathering were mom will gather and exchange their experience..
lucky me my kid's school ,the children's school, does the same thing.. some moms will gather with some teachers and they will be chatting about parenting issues.
I went to one meeting were they were showing us some useful parenting books, also in the gathering we talked about our kids' food ect.
talking about parents I would like to thank my great mom and dad who always listened to me and provide me with strength. they are always there for me.

Horse ridding
the translation was horrible.. It has changed the meaning of what I want to say.
So I am going to write it again in English
their are some animals that I love. Horses are one of these animals.. before telling you about my horse riding experience in San Diego let me tell you about horses.
It is said that horses were created before humans and they were not ridden by human they were brutal. but it was after the Prophet Ismaiel( the son of the prophet Ibrahim) was a youth and had grown up God told him a certain prayer and after that he was able to ride the horses. He was the first one to do so.
I would like to mention that the prophet Suleiman had horses which he loved them. he gave the Arabs horse and it was the best gift for them
The Arabs loved horses and felt that it is a source of proudness. they have treated the horses as if they were one of their family members.
Our prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) encouraged horse riding( for a good purposes). Also God has sworn in the Qura'n by horses.
horses has such good affect on human they will teach the rider leadership, self control and courage.
So back in kuwait I have registered Yousif in horse riding club
As for me I have ridden a horse when I was young in one of the Islands in U.S It was so much fun.
In San Diego I wanted to repeat the same amaozing experience I had but it wasn't the same
the place where I put my leg wash't adjusted and we only walked,, the horses were trained to walk I felt that I was only setting on the horse....
Well the main thing about horse ridding is the challenge of controlling the horse...
Well I think that my future activity is to take horse ridding classes

My progress in the 20% Project
I was successful in making my life easier.. Instead of cooking every day for my family, the food was in the freezer and they can pick what they want.
In the past week I have clearer idea of what my kitchen is going to have and what kind of food I am going to serve.
So my freezer will include:
1- meatballs
2- our traditional food(machbos) it is chicken and rice with Kuwaiti spices.
I was able to put it in freezer in portions.
this week I will work on the following:
1- chicken crumbs, I would like to replace the store chicken nuggets with it.
2- steaks

Machbos Dish
What is Machbos?????
It is a kuwaiti traditional food. It is chicken and rice with Kuwaiti spices.
For me it was a huge task to cook it.
before coming to San Diego I had a one class with my mom in the kitchen. I wasn't really participating but I kind of saw what it is about.
When I can to San Diego I brought two cooking books and one cooking booklet(that a lady wrote it for her son)
So I had to see from them how to do it..
My husband was telling me why don't you just see on line???
I had cooked several times.. sometimes it will be successful other will have little success.
For this dish we use several bans, so I thought instead of cooking it every time, wait to the frozen chicken to go to room temperature and....
I thought why don't I cook a big portion and then put it in the freezer..
So I cooked it and then frozen it..
We also put tomato garlic sauce on it. I also frozen that

My reflection
Asking me to write a reflect about my journey in this corse, reminds me with what what Jiff in the first begging said: Don't be an egg!!
And it is now just amazing to see to how far we have reached.. When someone asks me how is the master program, I will start telling them about a class that any personal thin we want to learn will be considered for credits.. That sounds awesome.
Well, but this doesn't mean that it is one of the classes that you are going to pass without effort... No No.. No...
For me I have these days that I want to know and search any thing I didn't know. even if it was a language that I didn't understand.. I hesitated to go and ask the ladies setting in one on USD's chairs who where talking this language and asks them what language do they talk
You have to spend hours in front of the your screen searching for things to share.. the sad part is when the times run and you didn't share something yet or when you don't find what you want..
So know let go more deeply to what I am using:
1- blog posts: I consider my blog to be to some extent my journal I will write the things I encounter and that I would like people to share.
2- Diggolet: It is a great library, where you can organize your things in.

Asking me to write a reflect about my journey in this corse, reminds me with what what Jiff in the first begging said: Don't be an egg!!
Well, but this doesn't mean that it is one of the classes that you are going to pass without effort... No No.. No...
For me I have these days that I want to know and search any thing I didn't know. even if it was a language that I didn't understand.. I hesitated to go and ask the ladies setting in one on USD's chairs who where talking this language and asks them what language do they talk
You have to spend hours in front of the your screen searching for things to share.. the sad part is when the times run and you didn't share something yet or when you don't find what you want..
So know let go more deeply to what I am using:
1- blog posts: I consider my blog to be to some extent my journal I will write the things I encounter and that I would like people to share.

My 20% project
My 20% will be about Cooking..
My goal is to eat healthy and fast homemade food..
I will be searching for ideas for recipes and for tips to make our food journey easier..
After finding these recipes and tips I will put them all in a youtube video or in a place where they can be shared by everyone.

The Essence of Connected Learning
This video was talking about:
1- engaging the kids in the learning experience, the key for a kid to learn is to make him need that learning and wants to do it.
Once the kid is ready and excited,t the information part will be easy.
2- learning should take place every were. In schools, homes, coffee shops ,ect.
3- we must change the way we teach. Instead of focusing on the outcome(backward design) we must focus on the learner on the kid.
the idea of focusing on the learner and not on the outcomes and goals, is kind of challenging. we are used to follow schedules and see if we met the standards. going on each student's interest might take time. It needs that we change the way we think and we see our children. also it is not a one person approach it must be the idea of the society...

Making my life easier and healthier
Food has a important part in our lives. They make us happy and satisfied..
But What Is The Kind Of Food We Are Eating??
Is it healthy neutritious food
or
caned and fast food?????
Well all of us prefered healthy food.. But the challenge is having to go to school, do work, and having two kids..
Ohhhh don't forget the cleaning.. (dish washer problem:
So my goal is to make healthy neutritious and clean food.. I want to make a fast home made food...
So I did the following at one time:
1- Use T-fal fryer
you can't imagine how easy and healthy using it.. Its amazing and worth it every penny.
2- taking fresh meat with spices (Kofta) and make it to be meat ball.. put every portion in a bag.
when I need them I will put them either with tomato douce or I will put them in my T-fal machine.

3- cooking minced meat, boiling pasta and putting them together to have a Yummy Lasagna.

It will be cooked with tomato sauce or yogurt sauce or......
So I will put them I the freezer and when I need them I will take one and add sauce to it, bake it or put it in my T-fal
This was the meat Journey.. I will up date you with the chicken journey....
New Mere Experience
This story starts last week in SOLES at USD. I saw so many people that I didn't see before at USD and a teens wearing read shirts greeting people. So I went to one of the read-shirt girls and asked her: what is going on?????
She told me their will be a debate between the meres of California.. I asked her: what is a mere??
She seems to be shocked so I've told her I am new to the american culture, she recovered from her shock and answered me.
I went to the library. And then I came back to SOLES on my way to the cafeteria.. as I was walking I saw the door of the room that the debate is in.. I took a pause and decided I will go in. see what is this.....
I thought that this is an opportunity for me and a new experience that I have to go through even If I have an exam that I have to submit after that day..
I said well this is learning.. it is about new experience
and here I would like to share the ideas about education of the two meres:
Bob Filner (congress man) Thoughts:
Their is no friction between teachers and students. The teachers cares about their students and have high expectations of them. He said that the problem is with the funding not with the teachers. Acutely teachers want more time to teach and not less..
Also he suggested that we have to engage institutions to take a share in education.. navy, sport teams, museum art.. we should make them care about kids..
Carl Demaio (councilman) Thoughts:
Make youth programs and let the students work, and he mentioned after school program
We need school funding, yet it is not all about money it is how schools perform and how to spend that money..
As talking about money he wants us to pay people for their performance.
Moreover, he talked about getting people involved in education and engaged in solving problems.. He will listen to all parties even students..
I have taken notes to what both of the mere said and after the debate I have asked a man to write for me their names because I didn't know anyone of them:) He was very nice..

Ohhh... Wait let me tell you about the red shirts..they were from an institution called reality changes, They were students that go through several programs. Going through this program will make them have more chance entering collages. especially that they will be the first generation collage students in their families

Generosity
Every person has a desire and something he is curios about. We have our own interests that we would like to create and then share. In our lives we have plenty of time to do the things we desire and we will do them without a pay back or contract. This what we call the design for GENEROSITY..
People usually will give more and more for what they desire than if we have a contract with them and have punishment. Actually it is said if you want someone to do less of something then add a punishment.
This idea of generosity might be related to education.. If we formed groups in school and give the students right to choose which group and area they are interested in, we will get high results of creative things.
We also can use these generosity assignments and activities to help us in our daily study, we can use them to as models clarify ideas and show the students how this good creative information is being shared. And they can also create and share theirs.
But down the road we might be encountered by THE KIND OF GENEROSITY. We see that we have two different paths in were we put donate our time.
The first path is that we create and share things that has a communal value. This kind of work is important to the participant yet it doesn't solve crucial issues.
The other path is the path in which we create and share things with civic value. These kind of shared documents is very important in our lives and it helps us to solve problems.
This idea might lead us to what Keamen have said "Free culture get what they celebrate" That means we have to reward and appreciate the people who use and donaite their time to cognitive surplus.
This kind of work... This kind of Generosity is what will change the world..

well What is in my internet bubble???
I would like to start from the idea of last sentence of the video.."the web job is to connect us all.. It will not do that if we were on the web of one"
We always think about the internet that its connect people and show us the world. Yet it might be the case that it show us our own world.. It show us what we want to know.. For example if I were back in Kuwait and I have google something I might have different results from what I will get if I google the same thing in US.
It is interesting to know that we are having electronic guards that filters whats get to me and what enters my bubble..
I agree that we must have the option to choose our domain search.. set the kind and information that we would like to be introduced to..
What's wrong with my dish washer????
I hate dishwashers and I think that they are dirty..
well this might not be the case now because I have realized that the problem is me not knowing how to use them. one of the problems I have encountered is using normal sop for the dish washer.
I made a small on line research about dishwashers and how do they work. I have got some information about the best way using my dishwasher and her is the link to a helpful webpage:

And also I saw on youtube how to use the dishwasher.

Use both of your minds
A whole New mind
When we were small we always have dreamed to be a doctor, an engineer or a pilot.. At these days studying what is in the book, getting tested and score grades is what matters. Actually by doing this we were using our left mind. the left mind is responsible for patterns, sequence and details. However the right hand side was not much used and appreciated.
So in this book Daniel pink says that it is the time of the conceptual age.. The age in which we shift from being so left mind and use our right side..
It is now the time for the conceptional age because of three things:
1- Abundance: we are surrounded with all what we need, we can buy so many quality things in a reasonable yet cheap prices.. so the market is full of things..
But what makes me choose this product and not the other is its appearance and how nice it is.. In order to add beauty to the good product we need the right side help.
2- Asia: Asian people are smart and clever they can do so many things in a low cost.. So if you want to keep your job and not lose it(being replaced by Asian employee) you should show some other skills using your right brain.
3- Automation: THis technology flow is affecting every one.. computers can do so many things that the left mind can do.. So show your intelligence by using your right mind.

My 20 percent project
HMMMMMM....... I think this will be an interesting project, since we will learn something we decided to learn it and yet get marks on learning it..

What is a community of practice???
Human beings are created in a way they need to communicate, share their interests and thoughts. So, as you can see you will find groups formed that share the same interest and connect because of it. This concept is their long time ago but it was toughed with more deepth and organization by the community of practice theory developed by Jean Lave and Eitinne Wenger.
So what is this theory?? "The Communities of practice is a group of peopleshare a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly."(Wenger)
Such groups has a great influence on individuals. Imagine you having an interest, how good you will feel when you know that you have a grouop that shares that interest and is commeted to it the same way you do. You can then stand on a solid ground with a high self esteem.
Furthermore their are some characteristics in order to call a group Community of practice and these characteristics are; 1- shared domain, that is members share and focus on the same interest. 2-The community, the community members often share and collaborate together. They actuelly learn from each other. 3-the members share the same practice. What makes community of practice different from other communities is that the members are active practitioners. They don't only share a common interest yet, they are in the field practicing it in their everyday lives. They will be working on their interest and they will share what they've got with their group. What they will share might be a new thing that they tried and worked out with them, information transfer....and problem solving.(ex. is in the video) These communities where created in governments, organizations,....and education. applying them in educational feilds is the thing that I would like to touch more deeply in this blog. According to the community of practice, schools are part of learning. They are essential yet they serve one sector of the learning process.listen to a lecture about the world and being tested on them is not the way of learning. The effective way of learning is to be in the picture of the world. being engaged and interested in the things that I am learning about with a community back up is the effective way of learning. To apply this theory in real educational practice we have to consider Three things; 1- learning occurs within the relation of the community members. Communication and relationship play a big rule in applying this theory. 2- Educators are not being the source that students will go to know the answers. Instead educators are involved in this community thats mean they are also seeking knowledge. 3-There is a connection between Knowledge and activities. After being explaining the community off practice theory , The question that will raise up is; how to apply this theory in my educational PLN????? To apply this theory we might find it hard because we used to believed our whole lit that learning is being addressed at schools in formal way. Yet we can apply this theory. To apply such thing I might post several life issues. Foe example; cooking, cars, races,...ect. introducing them to the students and every student will go to the subject that he is interested in. In this way we will be forming a groups that share the same interest. In every community of practice students will be reading, writing, analyzing, criticizing and searching for knowledge. After that every will share its results and thoughts and will be given feedbacks and corrections. The students at the end will be learning with such interest and engagement. THis kind of learning will last long. At the end I will quote some difficulties that the community of practice theory has encountered. "While some success has been had using communities of practice to enhance student learning, issues such as community membership, power relationships, student legitimacy, evaluation, and overlapping communities still need to be addressed." this quote is from

My passion
what you are passionate about in terms of education or leadership. . .What do you hope to do with this passion (or what are you already doing with this passion?) If you had to narrow down your passion to one specific aspect in terms of your future research, what would it be?
I find this question being very good and hard at the same time.
It is hard because I didn't think about it seriously. yet it is so important because answering this question will determine how you will teach and how your relationship with your students will be.
So it's time then that I think about this question and answer it.
My passion is that I would like my learning classes to be different.
meaning that I would like the students to imagine and be creative. and to satisfy this passion I always try to let my students think outside the box by giving them assignments where they have to think and do creative ideas.
Moreover,as I am encountering new ideas and thoughts at USD new passions have pop. They are to create a non sheep walking student. A student that has his own ideas and thoughts.
Since I my program is curriculum and instruction, I would like to construct curriculums that will focus more on how can we engage the students in what we are teaching rather than teaching them e boring stuff in a boring way.
Discovering me in the Web
We usually type an unknown thing person or place in Google and get to know it.. But it is also good to search yourself and see what kind of participant you are in the world. More prosaically what did you do and has been shared with the world.
When I googled my name I was like a visitor to the web. I uses the web when I need so to search and use certain things. But in this class I was exposed more to web media communication.
As I continue my journey in life, I like to use these tools of communication and share things I do, feel, or believe with other people.

Where you are in this continuum and how you see your future on internet?
It was such a good thing watching this video and getting exposed to learn about the two categories of web users, the resident who live part of their lives on the web pages and shares their personal lives withe others and the visitors who uses the web pages as a tool box taking what they need from it.
As a matter of fact I see that I am more likely a visitor.. I don't share much of my personal life by the means of technology and I uses the web pages when I need to find something..
although I have share twitter with some of my students I find that I didn't have such a big apperant and participation in it.
In the future I think I must engage myself more in technology and media tools. since the world is changing and our students language and the way they think has been changed, all educators must adapt and be up to date in order to understand and communicate with the next generation.

Learning in New Media Environments
What does this video mean to you as a person, parent, educator or a leader?
First of all I would like to mention that I was so interested while watching this video and I liked the way he presented his ideas and thoughts to have a better society.
And as a person I find the story that he said at the begging of his lecture so relevant to me. and this is because I feel how media has changed our relationships and how it can reconstruct the way our society looks like.This new media tools has brought the world to be even smaller than the way it used to be. Yet media has its bad consequences, as we saw in the story and how the books has changed how the relationships were, also our new media tools has some bad effects on us if we didn't use it wisely.
As an educator I totally agree that we have to change the way our students thinks and thats by changing the goals we set to them and the tools we use. Whether we liked it or not students uses media during the class and as it is said instead on fighting these medias and have our lectures be in the old fashion way why not just use them and have benefit from them as we educate our students. At the end we as educators has to realize that the world is changing and so has to be our teaching methods.
